about.
Maria João Vaz was born in Lisbon (Portugal), graduated from Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema as a professional actor with experience in theatre, movies, television and voice-over. In addition to the theatrical arts Maria João endeavoured in music, studying trumpet at Hot Club and performing live.
Having always had a keen interest in art, in all it's variety, in July 2017 Maria João started exploring a new artistic field, becoming a self-appointed sculptor.
Maria creates sculptures from clay, stone and/or by upcycling by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted objects transforming them into incredible works of art. Some of the most unconventional, unexpected, curious materials include: empty toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, straws, yogurt, butter or detergent containers, plastic bottles/jugs, roll-on deodorants' spheres, wire, Chinese chopsticks, toothpicks, wood scraps, stone or gravel, mosaics and pieces of rusty iron.
These sculptures are the result of pure unadulterated inspiration, representing in it's essence the very heart of Maria João's creative soul.
In 2023 she started to make Stop Motion movies with her sculptures.
